about
It has always troubled me that science and scientists don’t have the kind of standing, reputation, and recognition in modern society that they should have. Our youth should have our greatest minds as heroes, not some dimwitted athletes or entertainers. Posters of Darwin, Einstein, Newton, Hawking etc. should grace the walls of their rooms, not David Beckham, Lady Gaga, etc. (boy, I’m so out of touch with modern pop culture, I can’t even spontaneously think of many of the modern icons). I firmly believe that the heroes of our time (of any time, really) are what Richard Dawkins called “the poets of reality”, our scientists and thinkers. Yet, science has kind of a bad reputation in the minds of many, and the same goes for scientists. They don’t exactly have the best image. I just think it’s an unspeakable shame, and that’s what this song is all about.
lyrics
- Daisy chain -
Cognitive zeros are cultural heroes,
posture and style cover juvenile walls.
Minions of pastime or seekers of truth,
who are the idols of our youth?
Chorus:
Modern tedium,
mass delirium.
Hail the media,
their criteria.
Join the daisy chain,
check your brain at the door.
You’ll die entertained,
never sane, never bored.
Meaningless deeds are the most daring dreams,
petty nonsense receives undivided attention.
Tomorrow is sown in susceptible brains,
and we all throw the contaminated grains.
Chorus:
Modern tedium,
mass delirium.
Hail the media,
their criteria.
Join the daisy chain,
check your brain at the door.
You’ll die entertained,
never less, never more.
Bridge:
True heroism is all around
in laboratories, studies, and class rooms.
Under the radar, unnoticed, uncrowned,
while we squander our lifetimes
they build our world.
Chorus:
Reset your priorities.
Redefine celebrity.
Break the daisy chain,
claim your brain at the door.
Seek a higher aim,
rewrite popular lore.
