Discontent

from Wide awake (2002) by Indigo

/

about

This song was originally written and recorded for my second album ever, "Facing extinction", in 2000. I later re-wrote it for Indigo, and we re-recorded it in 2004 as a completely different song.
It was inspired by the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard, which I became exposed to in philosophy class in high school. The idea is that discontent is the first necessary condition for change. Many people are too easily satisfied, and while it is, in a way and to a certain extent, a virtue to be content with what one has, this can also be detrimental. As Goethe put it in his "Faust", "Man errs as long as he strives" (that's the official translation, as far as I know). But not striving at all is essentially equal to being dead. So we need to be discontented when it's appropriate to be, in order to change things for the better.
I actually wrote the bridge in the studio while recording the song.
