Head over heels

about

"Head over heels" originally was a poem I had written in my candlelit room at night, back when I was still living with my parents. It was on January 21, 2001.
It's a lament of the unrelenting force of change propelled by the passage of time. To be perfectly honest, I think I was really just scared of a big math test or something that was waiting for me on Monday (I wrote this on a Sunday night while the Dave Weckl Band's "Where's my paradise?" and "A simple prayer" were playing on repeat), and so I tried to hold on to the night, almost as though I could stop it from slipping away and yielding to the new day.
Generally, it's a song about the necessary realization that the only way is the way forward and to embrace change instead of fruitlessly trying to hide from it.
The poem was allegedly published in some American volume of poems by a company called Pen Pushers Publication. I was so proud of it that I eventually decided to take this poem and turn it into a song for my band Indigo. Of course it was changed here and there to fit the structure of a song. Also, it was originally titled simply "Time".
It was clear that the song was too "complex" or "technically advanced" for my band mates to play properly, so it was shelved.
Until now.

lyrics

- Head over heels -

Lonely searching for reprieve,
hidden deep inside a concrete shell,
safe from reality there’s a trace of hope.
Shadows dance on mighty walls,
rock-solid and undisturbed they stand and defy the world.
But not time.

Chorus:

And I slip away, the sunlight fades, the candles melt,
for nothing can hold the enemy that can’t be held.
Longing for eternity, but living in a memory.
The moment is gone and in the past,
security is not built to last.

Hopeless searching for reprieve,
hidden deep inside a distant dream,
safe from reality there’s omnipotence.
Tornadoes knock on my forehead,
rock-solid and unperturbed this bone will defy the world.
But not time.

Bridge:
I dreamed of a goddess with long hair.
She turned away and that skull was bare.
Then I heard distant trumpets blow,
I understood, and now I know:

Chorus II:
I need to set sail for the future, let tomorrow come,
on this giant rollercoaster heading for the sun.
The real enemy is all the waste of energy to fear.
I’m breaking steel, spinning the wheel, jumping in head over heels.
